1.Back Ground

Nowadays, the telecommunication systems and network are so developed to change our lives so drastically. But, as these systems are based on phonetic media, the audibly disabled cannot get the benefits.

We can mention the facsimile and the TV phone as its substitutions, but, there are some problems use as this. In the case of facsimile, because of its enforcement to write down and the lack of interactivity, it's not for communication as to talk. In the case of TV phone, the former work shows that its resolutional and functional ability is not enough to talk in sign language. Moreover, there are strong tendency that others eyes come into one's private area through TV camera.

In the other hand, most of former works focus on the communication between the normal hearing ability and the audibly disabled: like the interpretation systems between sign language and written languages or the CAE system for sign language.

So, in this project, we plan to develop S-TEL : new telecommunication system for sign language integrating various kinds of human sensing and virtual reality.

2.About Japanese Sign Language

The Japanese sign language (JSL) is 'the mother tongue' of the audibly disabled. It consists of finer, hand and bodily gestures and facial expressions.

As the JSL is a visual language, it has some features.
