What is Kagekami?
Kagekami/kagekami/(n) The God of the Shadow World.
The god who provides humans with the ability to touch shadows,
and connects the Shadow world to the Real world.
Concept
The concept of this work is to generate surprise in players
with the conversion of Shadow objects to Real objects
and give them the pleasure of being able to play with their own shadows.
Summary
In this work, there are two worlds, the Shadow world and the Real world.
The Shadow world is monochromatic and composed of two-dimensional objects,
and the Real world is colorful and consists of objects in three dimensions.
The player pitches the Shadow objects in the Shadow world and puts them into a special device,
the Shadow-Real converter.
Then, the player can recognize what the Shadow objects are from seeing their three-dimensional shapes
and colors in the Real world.
For instance, although there is a mere black circle in the Shadow world,
by putting the object into the Shadow-Real converter the player can recognize
that it is a shadow of an apple lighted from above.
It is difficult to identify the objects only from the shadows.
We want players to experience the surprise that comes from objects being different
from what the players guess based on the shadows, and to enjoy the sense of touching shadow in this work.
The Shadow world and the Real world are projected onto screens respectively. The player can pinch the Shadow object with own hand's shadow and put it into the Shadow-Real converter and see the real nature of a converted shadow in the Real world. We judge whether the player picks up the Shadow objects by taking in images from a CCD camera. The Shadow-Real converter can convert the objects from Shadow objects to Real objects with moving a motor and shining LED lights. Furthermore, we used Lightwave3D to create the Real objects in the Real world and control them by DirectX.
