A Method for Transmitting Medical Ultrasound Images via Satellite Communications

Abstract

This paper describes a newly developed ultrasound telediagnosis system which processes only a region of interest in diagnosis. In conventional image transmission systems, all pixels have been compressed and sent to a diagnosis site. As a result, it has yielded much transmission delay.

Ultrasound image transmission experiments were performed to evaluate this system. The region of interest was flexibly changeable from the diagnosis site. Communication circuit between the measurement site and the diagnosis site were linked by a satellite JCSAT-1(2Mbps). The experimental results indicated that this system allowed that image sequence having 15 frames per second (130X130 pixels, 64 grayscale) could be transmitted, and that the transmission delay was 2 seconds at the longest. In conclusion, this system is expected to be useful for ultrasound telediagnosis without too much transmission delay.
