Japanese knowledge open to west

 

Japan has long been a closed country. They have protected their scientific achievements. During recent time, University of Oulu has managed to open doors to Japanese science world.

At the moment, the moment as a part of scientific exchanging program, there are two researchers in Oulu from Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST), near Kyoto City; Professor Tomohiro Kuroda at the Faculty of Science and exchange student Atsunobu Kumura at the Faculty of Technology.

Kuroda is an international-level top researcher in his field. According to professor Petri Pulli, it is great honor for Oulu to get him here.

“The fact that we got Kuroda shows that they appreciate our level of research.”

Kuroda’s field of research is multimedia systems and shape recognition. He is in Oulu under project funded by Finnish Academy of Science to study new kind of user interfaces for mobile phones.

In future, the mobile phones might be operated by special device you can hold in your palm.

On Monday, Mr. Hirokazu Ishii from research department of Japanese university and Mr. Takao Yamaguchi from International unit come to Oulu. They will check how university cooperation has processed to according into future plans. This visit aims to develop this cooperation further.

“We can learn from Japan at least their long-term working mentality, thoroughness, and very good planning skills”, Professor Pulli says.
