 About IVRC

IVRC(Inter-collegiate Virtual Reality Contest) is a contest of interactive systems which use advanced technologies such as VR and Robotics. This contest has been held since 1993 and is organized by an executive committee whose composition is as follows: The Virtual Reality Society of Japan, Gifu-prefecture, Kakamigahara-city, Laboratories of Image Information Science and Technology.

This year, Team "Wada-Oroshi" from this Lab. exhibited an interactive olfactory game "fragra" and won Grand Prix and Laval Virtual Award.

"fragra - an interactive olfactory game system"

"fragra" is an interactive game which you can experience "fragrance" of some foods, for examples: apples, bananas, melons, peaches and even breads. Although the olfaction is a rare theme in virtual reality domain, players can interact with fragrances easily.

With Olfaction Display Device:Kaori-chan, players can smell objects displayed on HMD(Head Mounted Display). (Players can catch the objects with their virtual right hands.)

Game tutorial

There is a mysterious tree which bears many kinds of foods. Players can catch them by moving their right hands. When they catch one of foods and move it in front of their nose, they can smell something. The fragrance they smell does not always correspond to the appearance. So they have to distinguish whether the fragrance corresponds to the appearance or not.

 Game flow

put on devices(HMD on the head and glove on the right hand).

 start!!

 (1) move his/her right hand and catch a food.

 (2) now catched one.

 (3) move it to his/her own nose and smell it.

 (4) move it toward the circle when the fragrance fits to the appearance and vice versa.
